This week, meet Mrs. Morris! 🦅 One of our amazing 5th-grade teachers, Mrs. Morris is a proud Parsonsburg, MD native. Her journey at SHMS began as an undergrad intern, and she loved it so much she never wanted to leave! She has dedicated her entire teaching career to SHMS, inspiring young minds across all subjects. 📚✏️
Outside of school, she cherishes time with her family and enjoys soaking up the sun at the beach—especially in Jamaica! 🇯🇲☀️ Her dream destination? Hawaii! 🌺🌊

✨ SHMS Celebrates Black History Month! ✨
As we close out Black History Month, we honor the incredible legacy of African American leaders who have shaped our history. Today, we recognize Thurgood Marshall, a trailblazing lawyer, civil rights activist, and the first African American U.S. Supreme Court Justice. 🌟⚖️
Born in Baltimore, MD in 1908, Marshall dedicated his career to fighting for justice and equality. He founded the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and argued landmark cases, including Brown v. Board of Education, which led to the desegregation of public schools. 🏛️✊🏾
His legacy is honored by landmarks such as Baltimore’s BWI Airport and a statue at Lawyer’s Mall in Annapolis, serving as lasting reminders of his impact on civil rights and American history.

This week, meet Ms. Donyae Miles! 🦅 As our dynamic Physical Education teacher, Ms. Miles brings energy and passion to every class. Originally from Queen Anne’s County, she loves traveling, trying new restaurants, and repping Worcester County on the PhysEd & Health Advisory Council. 🏀💪
Her favorite movie? Love & Basketball! 🎬🏀 And if she could have any superpower, she’d teleport to help others in danger. 🦸♀️✨ What she loves most about SHMS? The close-knit, family feel that makes every day special! 💙

This February, we honor the incredible legacy of African American leaders who have shaped our history. Today, we recognize Fannie W. Birckhead, a Snow Hill, MD native and trailblazing community leader. 🌟✊🏾
Birckhead challenged the all-white Worcester County Commission, helping elect the first Black County Commissioner. In 1998, she made history as the first Black woman mayor on the Eastern Shore and later became Worcester County’s first Black Orphan’s Court Judge. Her leadership and dedication to justice continue to inspire. 🏛️💪🏾

This February, we honor the incredible legacy of African American leaders who have shaped our history. Today, we recognize Judy Johnson—a Snow Hill, MD native and legendary third baseman of the Negro Leagues. ⚾💪🏾
Johnson led Hilldale to three pennants (1921–1929) and a 1925 Negro World Series title, later playing for the Grays and Crawfords. In 1954, he made history as one of MLB’s first Black coaches with the Athletics and later became a scout. His impact on baseball earned him a place in the Hall of Fame in 1975. 🏆🔥
